Macular Degeneration

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a disease that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. It primarily affects older adults and is a leading cause of vision loss in people over 50. There are two main types: dry (atrophic) and wet (neovascular).

Common Symptoms

Early symptoms include blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty reading or recognizing faces, and needing brighter light for close tasks. Advanced stages can lead to significant central vision loss.

Treatment Options

Although macular degeneration has no cure, Clariti offers treatments to slow its progression. Common treatments include:

Valeda Light Therapy

The first device for treating dry macular degeneration, up to 65% of patients saw a 1-2 line improvement in vision over 1 year of treatment, and the other 35% saw a stabilization of treatment.  It reduced the risk of progression to Severe ARMD by nearly 80% in the initial US study.

AREDS Supplements

Special vitamins can slow the progression in some patients with dry macular degeneration.

Low Vision Aids

Devices like magnifiers and special glasses can help maximize remaining vision.
