Microincision Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery Bloomington

A cataract is caused by the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. This lens is what assists with the focusing of light rays on the retina. This process is what allows the image to be transferred to the brain. After the eye’s natural lens starts to cloud, it is impossible to return the lens to its original clear state, and cataract surgery is necessary. Many people think a cataract is a growth on the outside of the eye, but it is actually the gradual clouding that occurs on the lens located inside your eye. Certain factors may increase the onset of cataracts, such as smoking or UV Radiation, but it is said that if we live long enough, all of us will develop a cataract.
Most people don’t realize that they are suffering from cataracts because they do not notice the symptoms right away. Cataract patients will begin to complain about the dullness of colors, or having difficulty driving at night. Eventually, cataracts will limit a person’s ability to read the paper or see road signs while driving.

The Cataract Surgery Procedure

Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures performed today. The surgery itself is performed on an outpatient basis. Before the surgery itself, the eye must be dilated and cleaned so that the topical anesthetic can be administered. Next, a small incision will be made, and an ultrasonic device will be inserted into the lens envelope. This small device will then vacuum the material that formed the cataract from inside the eye.

A folded intraocular lens is inserted into the original lens envelope where it will remain. This lens can’t be felt or sensed by the patient in any way. Dr. Fornefeld will discuss the various lens options that are available to you. You can learn more about the Crystalens IOL or the Toric IOL.

What Are the Different Types of Intraocular Lenses?

Monofocal Lenses: The simplest approach is to correct each eye for distance with an artificial lens and to use reading glasses for your near vision. It uses the tried and true technology of monofocal IOLs that has been developed with great success for over 50 years. Patients with monofocal lenses and good distance vision generally require reading glasses or bifocals to see up close. Wearing reading glasses of some kind is very common after cataract surgery.

Crystalens Accommodating IOLs: The Crystalens will “flex” or “accommodate” like your natural lens to deliver a continuous range of vision – near, intermediate and distance. Crystalens has flexible hinges that enable it to move with your eye. The human eye uses its muscles to move the lens which allows you to focus on what you want to see. Crystalens can even reduce or eliminate your need for glasses during most activities.

Toric Intraocular Lenses: Astigmatism is a common condition that may cause blurred vision. The distorted vision is due to the eye’s cornea or lens having an irregular shape. If you have astigmatism, you may still experience blurred or distorted vision since the lens typically implanted during ordinary cataract surgery cannot correct this secondary condition. Toric intraocular lenses can replace your clouded cataract lens and correct astigmatism too.

After Cataract Surgery

Recovering from cataract surgery is a relatively fast and painless process. Most lens implant patients have a noticeably better vision within the first 24 hours of their surgery. Dr. Fornefeld will prescribe eye medications to help your recovery process. It is important that you follow his post-operative instructions carefully to ensure perfect recovery.
